Student Engagement in an Online English Lesson

One of the biggest challenges for any teacher/trainer/instructor is getting students to engage. Learners fall under a variety of categories, and online often a diversity of cultures. So we will explore the concept of student engagement, how to figure out what works best with the students you have in front of you, and different ways to get through to them.

I think we can all agree that if you don’t notice time in a classroom the session has worked – people have had fun – they have done what they enjoy doing. However, the challenges are myriad, what works for one may not work for another. One likes visual stimulus, another puzzles and quizzes, one likes teamwork, another working alone, one likes practical hands on challenges, another theoretical and so on.

The advantage of online learning is it is easier to divide students into discrete groups and perhaps allow them to tackle the subject in their own way – for example allow them to choose whether to work alone or in a group.
